Modern Foreign Languages

Mrs N Street - French & German

Miss L Saundery - Spanish & French

Mrs S Blewitt - French & Italian

At Sir Thomas Fremantle all students study at least one language. Year 7 students have two fifty-five minute lessons a week of French, whilst Year 8 and Year 9 students have three.  Students in Year 8 and 9 study German, Spanish and Italian over the three terms. Our intention is that we will offer French, Spanish and German at GCSE and hopefully Italian. Through our enrichment programme, many students have followed a basic intoduction to Mandarin.
Modern Foreign Language lessons are based on the four linguistic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.  Students are regularly assessed in these four skills and provided with both summative and formative feedback on how they are achieving.
We deliberately do not follow a specific course book as we would like the freedom that not being tied to a textbook allows.  However, in class we do make use of a variety of online resources, including ActiveTeach for Year 7, 8 and 9 French, and students' iPads.  Students are encouraged during lessons and outside the classroom to make use of French and German dictionaries to explore language as yet unknown to them and find ways of expressing themselves.  Being creative with language is key to becoming a successful language learner and therefore this is encouraged from the first lesson.
We are currently setting up links with a small secondary school in Cours-la-Ville, the town with which Winslow is twinned.
