Mathematics
Rationale
Our Key Stage 3 mathematics curriculum is based on the mastery approach – we want to ensure that all our students develop resilience in mathematics, are competent in solving problems, are keen to succeed, and will gain the confidence to become life-long mathematicians.
We will provide the skills to allow for greater understanding of the world, to develop a sense of curiosity about the subject and to encourage mathematical reasoning.
Students will be supported through frequent, varied practice, so that they gain conceptual understanding and are able to recall, make connections, and apply their knowledge of mathematical models in other areas.
As maths continues to be building blocks of skills and knowledge, at Key Stage 4 we continue to develop numeracy and problem-solving skills in preparation for GCSE examinations. GCSE Mathematics involves higher-order thinking skills, where students must apply their knowledge in a variety of practical contexts, as well as find cross-topic links.
We follow the AQA GCSE 8300 specification, which has two tiers, Foundation and Higher.
